Published: My Korean food guide and learning languages with a growth mindset

I'm proud to announce two works of mine which are now published:

"The Beginner's Guide to Korean Food and Restaurants" 
This needs little introduction for anyone who's been reading since my Korea days, as we've seen my "Korea food guide project" appear again and again in resolution posts over the past two years. Needless to say, I'm happy to have seen it through to completion. This is exactly what I would have liked to have when I first went. Now, do you know anyone who's traveling to or moving to Korea?

The second is a piece I worked on for FluentU earlier in the year:

"How to Unleash Your Mind Power: 5 Ways to Learn Any Language with a Growth Mindset"
The idea came after reading Carol Dweck's "Mindset: The New Psychology of Success" in January, because I kept seeing so many connections to language learning. I let the ideas swirl around and brainstormed for about another month before pulling everything together into a formal outline.

I think it's a topic I haven't read much about in the world of language learning advice, but which is vital to successful language learning. It's also a tool which can be applied to any area of your life to improve it, which is cool.

Thankful Thursday 6/16/16: Doctor, pharmacist and health system in France

I invite you to join me in practicing gratitude!

Last Friday night I came down with some sort of flu. No puking, but I was exhausted and my whole body was sore and hurt to move. I also had a super sore throat and my head hurt. In short, I knew I was ill with something.

I stayed in bed on Saturday and Sunday. By Monday the flu-like symptoms (sore body, fever) were gone, but a full-blown cold had taken its place, and continued in full force on Tuesday.

Tuesday just before midnight, boom, I feel my left ear plug up. No! I try plugging my nose and blowing. I try opening and closing my jaw, yawning wide. I heat up a steaming pot of water and pour it on a washcloth, which I hold over my ear.

Well, nothing can undo what's been done, and it progresses into a very painful ear, as ear infections are, keeping me up past 4 a.m. (to my horror) until I suppose I must have only fallen asleep out of pure exhaustion, as the pain had not yet subsided.

Les Coquettes: Summertime in Palavas

A few weeks ago, I happened upon the site Montpellier City Crunch, which has been awesome for reading in French because the content is interesting to me.

The site's writers do things in Montpellier—go to cafes, bars, restaurants and do activities—and then write posts about it. They're not too long, are written in a pretty casual tone I think. (Jacki, there are some cool cafes/restaurants I'd like to try out...!)

Anyway, at the end of May I saw this post (check out the pictures) of an afternoon event that's put on each month by the Coquettes. Each month's event is themed, and it costs 12 euros to attend the 4-hour afternoon consisting of three surprise workshops (they're not announced ahead of time).

In May's event (their second ever), they made a bunch of cool food—raw food, sushi, cupcakes—so it looked like a really fun way to learn something new in French with French people. (My international Meetup events are great and the people are cool, but unfortunately most people speak English. So I really want/need to do more French-only stuff.) So that night I bought a ticket online for June's event: "Summer Time" on Saturday, June 4 from 2-6 p.m.

Resolutions Checkpoint 2016: May

Even though I just checked in last week and made some adjustments to my resolutions, I still wanted to have an official checkpoint at the end of the month. Here we go!

May Progress

1. Volunteer

In this month's resolutions realignment (aka "quarterly" reflection), I decided to remove this from my focus and replace it with my Korean food guide for this next month—and later with French study. (Because I'm giving myself until June 21 to finish the Korean food guide.)

2. Learn Calligraphy
  • (+/-) 10 minutes/day from Amy Style worksheet set. (and track on spreadsheet) — I finished all of the faux calligraphy pages, and have just started pg. 13 which uses the dip pen and ink. I'm counting a total of 10 days on my chart, so about as third as often as I'd have liked.
  • In the past week I've also addressed my first three envelopes (name only) with my dip pen!
