Facebook-free: Damon

Our next interviewee for my Facebook-free Project is Damon, who I "met"on Twitter a few weeks ago. Let's get right to the introductions:

The basics:

Age: 40-something
Location: Texas
Passion: The truth
Length of time with FB account: About 2 years
Amount of time since leaving FB: Closed account in September 2010

Walk us through your decision to leave. Was it planned? Spur of the moment?

I somewhat planned to leave. The spur of the moment part was after witnessing censorship first hand. I posted something RE: 9/11 and poof, it disappeared. I re-posted it three more times with the same end result. I said, “I don't think so.” My final post was: FYFB! - then I closed my account.

Main reason for leaving (in one sentence):

Censorship, privacy (data mining) concerns.

Tell us what it's been like since leaving.

Haven't missed it one bit.

What other social media do you still use, and what have you left?

Recently started using Twitter again after closing my initial account from over a year ago. I also use WordPress for expressing my thoughts.

How do you socialize now?

Twitter, WordPress. As far as I can tell I haven't been censored on the platforms mentioned above.

How do you keep in contact with people?

Phone, email, conversation in a physical not virtual sense.

What would you say to someone who's considering leaving Facebook?

Go ahead and do it. You'll be better off in the long run. Trust me :)

Facebook has changed a lot since it was first released. Do you have any predictions about what it'll become in the future?

Nonexistent? Hopefully! :)

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us, Damon!

Have you (or has someone you know) left Facebook? I'd love to feature you (or them) here! Please get in touch with me: @rebewithaclause or rebewithaclause [at] gmail [dot] com.
