Thankful Thursday: 2/18/16

Thankful Thursday is a weekly segment that I began 1/10/13—read why here
I invite you to join me in practicing gratitude!

Today I'm honestly thankful to just be alive.

Anyone remember that French WWII show I'd watched last spring while living in Montpellier, "Un village français"? Well Netflix just added the first half of season 6, so I've been watching that this week. Even though we're near the end of the war at this point in the story, there were still many unnecessary deaths of innocents—which was obviously unpleasant and sad to watch.

But the thing is, that is just a TV show. The real war was unimaginably x times worse than the cruelty I've seen on the show. And there are still wars going on today (which is also somewhat unimaginable for me).

I'm one of those people who seriously can't believe the world still handles disagreements with others by killing people, as if we weren't in modern times where communication were more possible than ever. I don't think countries should have armies; war should be a thing of the past.

So I'm thankful to be alive, and that I'm not living in a war zone.

Facebook-free: Elizabeth Bechard

Our next interviewee for my Facebook-free Project is Elizabeth Bechard, who helps women follow their calls to be helpers and healers. I found Elizabeth through her blog post titled "Why I Left Facebook," and am especially glad our paths have crossed, as she adds a perspective to this conversation which we haven't yet seen.

The basics:

Age: 32
Location: Durham, NC
Passion: Health coaching, aromatherapy, integrative medicine
Length of time with FB account: Since 2009... about 9 years
Amount of time since leaving FB: Just over half a year (left 7/27/15)

Walk us through your decision to leave. Was it planned? Spur of the moment?

I'd say it was both planned and spur of the moment—something I'd debated doing for a while, and then finally, it just felt right

A Saturday walk around Rodez

Last Saturday it was nice and sunny in the afternoon (albeit super windy), so after my morning pottery "class," I took a stroll around town. Here are a few pics from that afternoon.

These stairs aren't too far from where we live. I climb them (you end up at the top of that big cement block-looking thing) to go to the art studio (Rodez is very much on a hill).

Climb all those stairs, and you can see:

Thankful Thursday 2/11/16: Oven

Thankful Thursday is a weekly segment that I began 1/10/13—read why here
I invite you to join me in practicing gratitude!

Today I'm thankful for our (now) working oven.

It didn't work when we moved in, so that weekend mid-January when I came down with the flu, Damien took the whole thing apart in the kitchen, and found which part was broken.

He ordered a new part online, and this past weekend took the stove and oven apart again:

And then put everything back together—with the new part. It worked!

So we bought muffin pans from the grocery store on Monday, and tonight I made these apple muffins from Cookie & Kate. I'd never made them before, but they are so delicious. Damien loves them too. Instead of Greek yogurt, I used some soy yogurt/pudding stuff (dairy-free) and went with honey instead of maple syrup. I only ended up with 11, not 12 muffins—but anyway, that recipe has my stamp of approval.

Next on the list are these banana oatmeal muffins.
