Resolutions Checkpoint 2015: August

Even when I tried to underestimate what I could do in two weeks, I still managed not to finish everything. But that's okay, because I've made progress in lots of areas that weren't on this month's focus list!

As always, completed items are bold, and completed items that weren't on my original list are both bold and italicized.

August Progress

1. Reach a high intermediate level of French.
  • Complete any 10 pages from my grammar workbook. - Did like one while watching a movie.
  • Finish collecting all visa documents, to apply for a long-term French visitor's visa on September 1.
  • I finished season 2 of Fais pas ci fais pas ça on Netflix last night (with French subtitles)—it's so good! I've been using this new technique where I take screenshots of dialogue with unknown words. Then after the episode, I go through the screenshots and look up the word, using the full sentence and image as context to help remember the meaning. Really slick!

2. Diversify my income to three sources.
  • Make Fiverr gig for ESL editing idea. - I didn't make the Fiverr gig, but about two weeks ago I had this idea of a little side business/website related to ESL and somewhat related to editing. Hosting and a domain name have been purchased, but I haven't even found a WP template I like yet, so stay tuned for more details.

3. Eat a whole foods, plant-based diet; improve digestion.
  • No more ice cream. - I had it less often, but I still had it. I just read an awesome chapter tonight in this great book "The Willpower Instinct" (highly recommended, by the way, and I'm only halfway done), which I think will help.
  • Watch the documentary "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" with parents if possible. - I watched it with my dad the day after I posted last month's checkpoint, and really want to go on a week-long juicing cleanse! Needed: juicer.

September Focus

1. Reach a high intermediate level of French.
  • Watch at least one episode of Fais pas ci fais pas ça a week, taking screen shots and looking up words. (One a week shouldn't be hard to meet)
  • Make another attempt at doing some grit work with grammar: 10 pages from my workbook.
Since I am very likely heading back to France for a good chunk of time, where I'll be using the language every day, I'm going to focus more on #2 this month.

2. Diversify my income to three sources.
  • Select (meaning perhaps purchase) a WordPress theme for site.
  • Make site, have it go live.
  • Contact at least three ESL learners to pilot the program and provide feedback/testimony.
3. Eat a whole foods, plant-based diet; improve digestion.
  • Watch the documentary "Food Chains" on Netflix
  • Finish reading "The Willpower Instinct"
