Thankful Thursday: 10/3/13

[Thankful Thursday is a weekly segment that began 1/10/13 - read why here.  I invite you to join me in practicing gratitude!]

Today I'm thankful for the gorgeous surroundings in my town -- especially up by the university.  Since today is a national holiday here in Korea (National Foundation Day), Wednesday night felt like a Friday.  So naturally I pigged out and stayed up far too late doing absolutely nothing online.  This resulted in me sleeping in today and not doing much until 2pm.  I felt really lazy.  It was a nice, sunny day, so I made myself get up and go outside.  I brought along a sling backpack with my book and journal, planning to find somewhere under the sun to sit and read for a while, and then walk home.

I walked up to the university campus, which is actually farther (and bigger) than I originally thought.  It's uphill, so I kept having amazing views when I would stop and turn around to see where I came from.  The campus is beautiful as well.  I kept walking farther back, higher up, and then at the end of the campus (the road stopped) I found a hiking path!  So up I went.  I was so giddy, I felt like a child on Christmas.  I saw some of the biggest grasshoppers I've ever seen in nature, as well as the smallest.  I thoroughly enjoyed the impromptu hike.  Later, heading back down through the university, I felt completely different than when I had left the house.  It was as if it were a completely new day.  When I got home, turns out I had been out walking for two and a half hours!  I'll post more photos tomorrow, but in the meantime here's a teaser:

“Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn’t learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn’t learn a little, at least we didn’t get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn’t die; so, let us all be thankful.”
